Ever wanted to know what it's like to go to the top of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge? Now you can see what it's like without getting weak in the knees!

To those who are scared of heights the Bridge Observatory in Prospect seems like an impossible option. But now you can take the 50 second ride to the top, while both feet are on the ground.

The adventure starts by buying your tickets at the gate house at the entrance to Fort Knox State Historic Site. From here continue down the hill to the observatory parking lot. The lot has plenty of parking, restrooms, and vending machines.

Once you park, grab your tickets and head down the path to the tower. The observatory is wheelchair friendly, but not animal friendly, so almost all are welcome. Once you enter the observatory base you will be greeted by facts and an employee of the Friends of Fort Knox.

Once the elevator is ready, up you go! This is one of the fastest elevators in the state as it only takes 50 seconds to get to the top! Be prepared for your ears to pop! Also be ready for the sometimes shocking view when the doors open. Here, because of the elevator shaft, you are only about 3ft away from floor to ceiling glass windows. Tower attendants will remind you to look straight out at the horizon if you feel woozy!

From here you still have 1 more floor to go to get to the observation deck. Take a right off the elevator to go up the stairs or those in wheel chairs may use the lift to the left. Once up on the observation deck you can stand a little further back from the windows as you take in the amazing 360 view from about 420ft in the air!

For those who may be nervous, there are emergency stairs, and there are always staff at the top and bottom. The observation deck is open May 1-October 31. More on the observatory can be found here.
