Fatal Crash on the Maine Turnpike Involved 2 Vehicles and 1 Truck
A West Bath woman has died after a crash on the Maine Turnpike that involved another vehicle and a tractor-trailer.
Where Was This?
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says State Police responded to the crash in Saco at approximately 7:17 Monday night on the northbound side of the turnpike. When they arrived they found three vehicles that had been involved in a crash.
How Did the Crash Happen?
An initial investigation of the crash indicates that a Volvo S40 sedan, driven by 53-year-old Deidre Winberg of West Bath, had rear-ended a Jeep Compass. The Jeep, driven by 33-year-old Alicia Preston of Portland, was able to continue up the roadway and stop safely.
The Volvo spun out of control, finally coming to stop in the middle of the three lanes directly in front of a tractor-trailer truck, which was unable to avoid it. There was a significant crash between the truck and Volvo, which propelled the truck through the median guardrail. This resulted in the northbound side of the interstate being closed for several hours. The passing lane of the southbound side of the highway was also closed for a time.
Were the Other Drivers Hurt?
Winberg suffered critical injuries in the crash and was transported to Maine Medical Center where she passed away. Preston was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the truck, 36-year-old Norvel Jackson of Georgia wasn't hurt.
Our condolences to Ms. Winberg's family and friends.
This crash remains under investigation.
