Law enforcement officials will be at Airport Mall in Bangor Saturday to collect unwanted drugs and shred sensitive documents.

Members of the Penobscot County Sheriff's Department and Bangor Police Department will be at the Airport Mall from 7 o'clock Saturday morning until 6 o'clock in the afternoon for the Spring Cleaning Drug Take Back day. Folks are encouraged to drop off their unwanted medications so that they can be properly incinerated.

Why do that when you could simply dispose of them at home? Well, putting them in the trash means that they could fall into the wrong hands, whether it's someone in your own house who takes them out of the garbage can, or someone who sees them during trash collection. Either way, they could end up doing more harm than if they were taken care of properly. And flushing the pills just means that they end up in our water system.

In addition to the medication collection, officials will be shredding sensitive documents. So, if you're spring cleaning your files and have expired credit card bills, bank statements, or anything that has personal financial information on it, you can take it to Airport Mall tomorrow and have it shredded for free. With so much identity theft in the world these days, it's a much safer way to dispose of those kinds of documents.

Similar events are being held around the state so, if you can't make this one, contact your local law enforcement agency for information about what's available in your area.
