The Dixie Chicks landed in Bangor Thursday night, bringing their MMXVI Tour to Darling's Waterfront Pavilion.

The biggest selling female band of all time in the United States, the Chicks -- Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer -- played to a crowd of more than 11,000 people.

The band first performed in Maine at the Maine Lobster Festival in 1998, just as their album "Wide Open Spaces" became a huge success. (Interestingly enough, Sha Na Na was the other headlining act that year.)

"It was the first time thousands of people knew our songs," Maines told the crowd Thursday night, recalling the concert in Rockland. "It made me think, ‘I think we might be onto something here.'"

Turns out Maines was right. The Austin, Texas-based trio went on to sell more than 30 million albums worldwide and win 13 Grammy Awards.

The Chicks now move on to Hartford, Conn., where they will play the Xfinity Theatre.
