An altercation with a suspect who allegedly resisted arrest resulted in a police-involved shooting that sent three to the hospital.

Police Say the Suspect Was Shot As He Was Being Arrested

Christopher Hongo, 34, was shot by police as they tried to take him into custody.

A Dexter Police Sergeant  Was Allegedly Attacked By the Suspect

Dexter Police Chief Kevin Wintle says a call came into the police department just after 2:00 Tuesday morning of a man acting erratically. Sergeant Gary Morin and Chief Wintle responded to the scene and spoke with Mr. Hongo, who they say was yelling and acting aggressively. As they tried to take Hongo into custody, he allegedly resisted and assaulted both officers.

Mr. Hongo allegedly pushed Sergeant Morin over a rock wall, then got on top of him and continued his assault, which is when the Sergeant shot Mr. Hongo. He is being treated for his injuries at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Both Members of the Dexter Police Are Now On Leave

Chief Wintle and Sergeant Morin were transported to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield for treatment and have since been released. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, which is standard procedure in all police-involved shootings. The Office of the Maine Attorney General will investigate and rule on the use of deadly force by the officers.
