High winds from a powerful storm that blew through the area Wednesday night have left more than 6,000 Eastern Maine households without power, according to Emera officials.

Most of the outages are in Penobscot County -- with Orono being the hardest hit. University of Maine officials announced they were closing the school at 11 a.m.

Other outages have been reported in Aroostook, Piscataquis and Hancock counties.

Emera said most of the power should be restored by the end of the day on Thursday.

Customers may report outages or ask questions by calling Emera's Customer Service Center at (207) 973-2020 or 1-855-EMERA11 (1-855-363-7211).
