Officials say speed and road conditions may have been factors in a Sunday morning crash that killed a local man and injured two others.

43-year-old Gregory Griffeth of Skowhegan died at the scene of the accident that was reported just before 11 a.m. Sunday on the Shadagee Road in Cornville. Somerset County Sheriff's Deputies told Centralmaine.com that Griffeth was driving his pickup truck and towing a utility trailer when his vehicle struck an SUV being driven by 23-year-old Sinan Deris of New York.

Deris suffered possible broken bones in his legs and hand injuries while his passenger, Tunc Sarden, 20, of New York, was said to have experienced chest pains from the seat belt. The impact of the crash was so severe that it caused the pickup's bed to separate from the frame and end up in the ditch.

The accident remains under investigation but officials say excessive speed and road conditions may have been contributing factors.
