A portion of North Main Street in Brewer was blocked off Tuesday before police learned the man with a gun was trying to do a good deed.

The call came in just after 4:00 p.m. of a man with a gun near the corner of North Main and Holyoke Streets.Officials closed part of North Main Street until the man could be detained, which is standard procedure for incidents involving firearms.

But once police had detained the man, they learned that he was actually a good Samaritan. Police told WVII-TV that the man said he'd heard a woman screaming, grabbed his firearm, and went to see if he could help. The woman told detectives that she was involved in a separate incident but declined to press charges.

Police called it a misunderstanding and said the man wasn't charged.
