Police say an apparent pipe bomb was discovered Sunday at the Winterport transfer station.

The device was discovered in the compactor by the transfer station supervisor.

Sgt Joel Davis of fire marshal’s office told the Bangor Daily News the device "was authentic looking enough to raise concerns."

"The device was made of four pieces of PVC pipe and had wires sticking out of it," said Winterport Fire Chief Thomas Doe.

The bomb squad was called to the scene, and a detonation coil was used to destroy the device.

Police are still trying to determine who left the device behind.

The transfer station was shut down for about three hours while police responded to the scene and detonated the device.
