Bangor Woman Charged in Fentanyl-related Death of 1-year-old Child

A Bangor woman faces charges related to the 2018 death of her 1-year-old daughter.

Kimberly Nelligan, 33, was charged Tuesday with endangering the welfare of a child and drug possession, according to a news release from the Bangor Police Department.

The charges came after a post-mortem examination conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found the cause of death to be probable toxic effects of fentanyl.

Citing court documents, the Bangor Daily News is reporting Nelligan rubbed heroin residue on her daughter's gums in an attempt to help her sleep.

On October 19, 2018 at approximately 11 p.m., Bangor Police and Fire responded to a residence located at the Holiday Trailer Park in Bangor for a report of an unresponsive 1-year old child. Initial responding officers began performing CPR on the child, who was then transported to the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Efforts to save the child at the hospital were unsuccessful and the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Detectives of the Bangor Police Criminal Investigation Division also responded and have been investigating the incident.

Nelligan was transported to the Penobscot County Jail where she is currently being held without bail.

This matter remains under investigation.
