A man who died in the aftermath of a fire on Essex Street in Bangor was the victim of a homicide, Bangor police said Monday.

Berton Conley, 59, was discovered unconscious on Friday, Nov. 1, inside a home at 258 Essex Street. Bangor fire crews discovered the man when they were called to a report of smoke at the residence.

Conley, who lived at the address, later died at a local hospital.

A post-mortem examination was conducted over the weekend at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta. At the conclusion of the examination, the manner of death was determined to be homicide.

Investigators of the Fire Marshal’s Office have determined that the fire at the residence was incendiary in nature.

Police say it is an isolated incident and there is no concern for the safety of the general public.

The investigation is ongoing.
