One Person is Dead After a House Fire in Auburn
Auburn Firefighters battled a huge house fire on Monday, and found one person who had died.
The Deceased is Believed to Be the Homeowner
The deceased is believed to be 60-year-old Steven Berry, who lived alone in the building. Mr. Berry's sister Stephanie and nephew Hunter told WGME-TV that they had battled to find help for the 60-year-old, who was not able to care for himself. Stephanie said that he had been in a local rehab facility several times and had been released, despite her insistence that he was not mentally stable to take care of himself.
An Auburn Home Burned During the Early Morning Hours on Monday
It was just after 1:30 Monday morning when the Auburn Fire Department was called to 790 Washington Street North for a report of a structure fire. When crews arrived on the scene, there was heavy fire throughout the two-story home and the roof had collapsed. The second floor was unstable, so fighting the fire was challenging.
Maine Firefighters Found a Man's Body in the Building
While investigators worked to find the origin and cause of the fire, the man's body was found inside the home. The body has been sent to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office to confirm his identity and determine his cause of death. The State Fire Marshal's Office will be conducting further investigations into how the fire started.
