Full disclosure, I didn't get a license until I was 36.

Yup. You read that right. I was 36 frikkin' years old before I got behind the wheel of a car in an earnest fashion. For years I never bothered because I lived and worked on the peninsula in Portland, and I simply walked everywhere. Sure, there were certainly times it would've been more convenient, but it was never a huge deal.

Until my wife and I moved out of town. Then she was getting pretty sick of having to adjust her work schedule to accommodate mine. After a while it just seemed way easier to get my driver's license than to get a divorce. Nowadays, I can't ever imagine my life without it. I had no idea it would be so instrumental to my being.

But, is there ever a time an adult can drive alone with just a permit?

I saw this thread on Reddit asking that very question, and it actually even came up in my life once. I needed desperately to get to work on an early Sunday morning, and there was no one to give me a ride, so I contemplated driving myself, assuming I wouldn't get in much trouble if I was caught. Luckily, I didn't do it.

According to the State of Maine website, no Mainer is allowed to drive any vehicle alone if they don't have a license. All drivers in training must have a permit, and accompanied by an adult over 20 that's held a license for at least two years. This applies to everyone, and there are no exceptions.

It's all for your own safety, and frankly the safety of everyone else, who also don't need to watch out for your inexperience behind the wheel. Do the world a favor, if you don't have a license, don't drive a car. Wait your turn...
