4 Types of Fireworks That Are Illegal to Use in Maine
Some of these are commonly used at weddings and celebrations in Maine, but are illegal and dangerous.
Although fireworks have been legal for a few years, there are some that are still not legal to use, sell, or even posses in the state. Most of these are illegal because of the excess danger they can cause, as well as reputations for misuse. Even though many towns have their own fireworks ordinances, here are the 4 types of fireworks that are illegal in the entire state of Maine.
Defined by the State of Maine as: 'A tube containing more than 20 grams of chemical composition, with a propeller blade attached. Upon ignition the rapidly spinning device rises into the air. A visible or audible effect may be produced at or near the height of flight.' These spinners have a tendency to not go the direction you plan and can move very fast.
Defined by the State of Maine as: 'A device similar to a sky rocket in size, composition, and effect that uses fins rather than a stick for guidance and stability. Missiles shall not contain more than 20 grams of total chemical composition.' These are basically bottle rockets without the launch stick. Like the spinners these move fast and are unpredictable.
Defined by the State of Maine as: 'The type of balloon that requires fire underneath to propel it.' Many people don't think of these as fireworks as they are a lot more quiet and a lot less explosive. But because of Maine's dense forests, the idea of paper bags with fire in them is not a good idea, and illegal.
Defined by the State of Maine as: 'Cylindrical tube containing not more than 20 grams of chemical composition as prescribed under section 3.7 and Table 4.3-1 of the American Pyrotechnics Association Standard 87-1 with a wooden stick attached for guidance and stability. Rockets rise into the air upon ignition. A burst of color and/or sound may be produced at or near the height of flight.' These are very similar to #2, but they instead have something used to launch the explosive.
