A Wiscasset police officer was taken to the hospital after his police cruiser collided with another vehicle early Thursday morning.

Police Sgt. Alfred Simmons, 64, was driving south on Route One in front of the Circle K convenience store, when a vehicle driven by Yeshi Khendrup, 42, of El Cerrito, California, pulled out of the Circle K parking lot and into the path of Simmons' cruiser, according to a report from Wiscasset Newspaper.

Simmons' vehicle was struck on the driver's side and suffered substantial damage.

Simmons was transported to the Miles Campus of Lincoln County Health in Damariscotta after complaining of chest/stomach pain.  His injuries are not believed to be serious.

Khendrup, who was not hurt in the accident, was issued a summons for failing to yield the right-of-way.
