All respect to pure-bred dogs, you have to love a mutt. They're often funny-looking, usually milder and more moderate in temperament, and often have less health problems. Huffington Post did a blog recently about some adorably awkward mixed breeds. They're all so cute!

Of course, I'm a big champion of the mixed breed dog. Our dog Copernicus, who I often talk about on-air, is an extremely unusual mix. Known as a Jackador, he's a mix of Jack Russell and Chocolate lab. And, unlike many unusual mixed breeds you find these days, he was not an engineered mix. He just had a somewhat randy Jack Russell Dad who thought his Chocolate Lab Mom was cute!

Before Copernicus, there was Floyd, now known as 'The Great Dog' around our house. (like the Great Pumpkin...get it?) Floyd and Jim had been pals for all of Jim's adult life. A Huskador, he was a Husky-Labrador Retriever mix. Let me just tell you, if you ever have a chance to adopt one of these dogs, do it. They're healthy, loyal, sweet, and affectionate.  I think Floyd won my heart before Jim did, and I loved the two years that I got to enjoy having him as part of my life. We lost Floyd the summer-before-last at the ripe old age of 16.

Now, don't get me wrong. My son's dog (my grandpuppy) is a pure-bred Golden Retriever and he's the sweetest boy! I love pure breds. But there's just something special about those mutts. They'll steal my heart every time!
