Two people were arrested in separate busts in Southern Maine this weekend and charged with trafficking in heroin.

Sanford Police received information on Friday that 36-year-old Jorge Medina of Sanford would be traveling to Massachusetts to pick up a large amount of heroin. The drugs would later allegedly be sold throughout the greater Sanford area. Police contacted the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, who then began a surveillance of Medina.

As a result of that effort, a vehicle in which Medina was a passenger was stopped at around 6:30 p.m. in York. It was searched, with the help of a State Police K-9 and 32 grams of suspected heroin, 4 grams of crack cocaine, and 4 grams of cocaine hydrochloride were seized. Approximate street value of the drugs is $6,000. Medina was arrested for Trafficking in Heroin and taken to the York County Jail, where bail was set at $25,000. The driver was issued a traffic summons and released.

While DEA agents and Troopers were conducting the Medina investigation and arrest, assisting agents noticed a vehicle traveling northbound from New Hampshire being operated by Leah Thurlow. She was arrested in early March for possessing heroin after she was stopped on the turnpike as she allegedly was bringing heroin from Massachusetts. She was out on bail for those charges.

Troopers stopped her vehicle and agents searched it as part of her bail and seized approximately 16 grams of suspected heroin. She was arrested for Trafficking in Heroin and Violation of Conditions of Release and transported to the York County Jail. No bail was set due to her present bail. Approximate street value of the heroin found in her vehicle is $2,500.

Anyone who thinks they may have information about the illegal sale of drugs is urged to contact the MDEA office closest to them, or by calling the MDEA tip-line at 800-452-6457.
