Horror movie month started early this year at our house with 'The Messengers' on Netflix, a pretty good horror movie with an all-star cast and solid story.

Jim and I celebrate Halloween each year by watching horror movies throughout the month of October. We can never wait that long, however, and will start the fright-fest late in September. This year was no exception as we dimmed the lights over the weekend and checked out the listings on Netflix. What we came up with may not have been the scariest movie I've ever watched, but definitely had a good story and a great cast!

'The Messengers' tells the story of a family who has left city life to buy a remote farmhouse and grow sunflowers. Mom and Dad, played by Dylan McDermott (The Practice, American Horror Story) and Penelope Ann Miller (The Artist, American Crime Story), seem excited about the house that is in rough shape when they arrive. And even the teenage daughter, played by Kristen Stewart of 'Twilight' fame, seems optimistic about the possibilities, despite the truly creepy looking digs. But something is 'off' in the family and you quickly get the sense that there's a reason why they left their urban life.

Enter an attractive local guy, played by John Corbett (Northern Exposure, My Big Fat Greek Wedding), who offers to work the fields for the family. Oh yeah, and the family has a little boy who, for some reason, never talks. (that's revealed during the movie, too)

I won't give away the plot but you can probably guess that the house has some spirits and the family finds out they've purchased more than they bargained for. At times, the scares were predictable, but still pretty effective! The best part of the movie, to me, was the story. It kept me engaged all the way through, and I found myself caring about this family and wanting to see how it turned out. And, as it turned out, the story stayed strong all the way through!
