Grab the Tequila! Nantucket Beach is ready to be made into a margarita!

As photographer Johnathan Nimerfroh walked along Nantucket Beach in Hull Massachusetts he noticed the waves crashing on shore were making a much different sound. Upon further inspection he noticed the waves were semi frozen creating slushy, Slurpee like waves!

This is a rare occurrence but is no surprise with the record breaking cold temperatures in New England this winter. It is rare because not only does it have to be colder for salt water to freeze but also because it has more of a current than most freshwater. Freshwater freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit but saltwater requires temperatures colder than 28 degrees.

You have probably seen images of ice floating in the oceans around colder climates like Antarctica, so this doesn’t seem that rare. What makes this circumstance unique is that the water itself is freezing even though it is still moving with the current.
