A mother who was on her way to be induced at the hospital was killed in a crash but her unborn baby survived.

Skowhegan Police say the 27-year-old woman was driving an SUV when the vehicle hit black ice just before 7 o'clock Monday morning on a stretch known as the Canaan Road. She lost control of the vehicle near the intersection with East Ridge Road, Eaton Mountain Road, and Route 2. The vehicle hit a snowbank sideways and rolled over, coming to rest on the driver's side on a frozen pond.

According to centralmaine.com, the woman was killed in the crash but her unborn baby was delivered by emergency C-section at Redington-Fairview Hospital. Police say the newborn was in critical condition as of noon today. An adult man and an 8-year-old girl were also in the vehicle. They were hospitalized and their conditions were not available.
