A Rumford reserve police officer, Scott Landis, was killed in a plane crash in Massachusetts on Friday while his brother Patrick Landis suffered critical injuries in the accident, police said.

The brothers were spreading the ashes of their father, who recently died of cancer, when their plane apparently suffered an engine malfunction and crashed into a pond near Cranland Airport in Hanson, according to investigators.

Patrick Landis was listed in critical condition at a Boston hospital on Friday.

Scott Landis was an experienced helicopter pilot who flew Blackhawks with the Army National Guard.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
