As a Micmac Native from Northern Maine, basket making was something that I grew up around. Many of the baskets created served as a needed item for potato farmers and their pickers. These days, however, Native baskets serve both function and beauty. And there is one basket maker that is receiving deserved accolades for her lifelong work--Molly Neptune Parker, a Passamaquoddy Native from Princeton, Maine.

Molly has taken the art of Ash basket making to levels that are truly mesmerizing. She is so good in fact, she is being honored, along with a few others, by the National Endowment for the Arts as a recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship in Washington.

Check out these baskets!
