The Maine Chiefs of Police Association has announced its support for a November ballot measure that would tighten state gun laws.

The association’s board, according to the Bangor Daily News, recently voted unanimously to support the measure, which would require background checks for private gun sales and gun transfers.

Seven police chiefs from southern Maine stood with South Portland Chief Edward Googins as he announced the group's support for Question 3 on Wednesday.

"Criminal background checks are the single most effective way to prevent felons, domestic abusers, people with severe mental illness and other dangerous people from purchasing firearms,” Googins said.

Opponents of the ballot initiative say the measure would create hurdles for Maine hunters and is unnecessary given the state's low crime rate.
