Students from the Greater Portland area and the town of Naples are okay after an earthquake hit during their trips to Ecuador.

More than 2,500 people were injured and over 270 people killed as a result of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Ecuador on Saturday. As of Monday, Greater Portland Christian School officials posted on the school's Facebook page that their students are fine, but the region where the students are located is still without power, so communication is difficult.

In addition, roads are in bad shape, and the nearest airport is closed, so getting back home could be difficult. Officials say, at this point, they're not sure exactly when they will be able to get from Manta to Quito, from where they will be able to fly back to Portland.

WCSH-TV reports that a group of students from Lake Region High School in Naples, Maine, studying in Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, are also safe.

School officials are asking for prayers, not only for the students to make their way back to their families, but also for the people of Ecuador who 'have suffered great loss - human and material.'
