An active meth lab was discovered in the basement of a home on Spring Street in Hallowell Wednesday night, Maine drug agents said.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency's meth lab team arrived at the single-family home to gather evidence on Thursday.

Drugs agents said they found a substantial amount of meth and the ingredients to make the drug in the basement.

Christopher Kessell, 36, who lives at the home, was arrested and charged with trafficking in methamphetamine.

Kessell was taken to the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta.

The raid on Kessell's home marks the 104th time the MDEA has responded to a meth-related incident this year, compared to just 56 in 2015.
