Crews are working today to remove the light poles from the Penobscot River Bridge, spanning the river between Bangor and Brewer.

The Maine Department of Transportation says the poles are getting old and badly in need to replacement. So crews are on the bridge today, removing them, in preparation for new ones.

One lane of traffic will be closed at a time on the bridge, so motorists will want to use caution when traveling onto the span. Although a Department of Transportation release said the sidewalk is still open to pedestrians, signs at either end of the bridge asked pedestrians to seek alternate routes.

New poles will be installed at a later date.
