Police say if a couple injured in an interstate motorcycle accident yesterday hadn't been wearing helmets, the accident could very well have been fatal.

According to WLBZ-TV, 24-year-old Jonathan Blum of Augusta was traveling too fast to stop for a traffic tie-up. He locked up his back wheel and went into a skid, in an effort to avoid hitting the stopped vehicles. He was thrown into the roadway while his passenger, 24-year-old Kayla Littlefield of Augusta landed in the grassy median. Both suffered serious but what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

State Police say both riders were wearing helmets, which likely saved their lives.
