Wet a line this weekend, but be cautious of ice conditions.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife set this weekend, February 17 and 18, as Free Family Fishing Days. On these designated days anyone can fish in Maine waters without a license. These days are listed in the 2018 law book.

The event gives Mainers an opportunity to try the sport without having to purchase a fishing license. If your fishing license has been suspended or revoked, no fishing for you.

All other laws and regulations must be followed. Those regulations and bag limits can vary depending on the body of water you choose to fish. It's recommended that you read through the 2018 Maine Open Water and Ice Fishing Law Book.

The recent snap of mild weather has deteriorated the ice on many ponds and lakes around the state. The MDIFW cautions those who plan on hitting the ice, and suggest everyone be prepared with proper safety gear like ice picks.

The Free Family Fishing Days for open water fishing are set for June 2 and 3.
