Free Dental Care for Kids and Adults Downeast

Once again this year, students from New York University's College of Dentistry will be in Downeast Maine, offering free services to children and adults. While the adults are seen on a walk-in basis, appointments need to be made for the kids. And do it soon, before they're full up!

The Washington County Children's Program offers the clinic each year in Machias, and it's been very successful. As a matter of fact, WCCP's Theresa Alley told us they've cut back to once a year, rather than twice each year, because the children are doing so well. She said it's rewarding to see the kids looking great and making healthier choices.

And that's part of the deal, according to Alley. Once the kids get in the chair, the professionals with the NYU Outreach team will educate them on proper dental habits. They'll learn about the importance of regular brushing and flossing, but also the difference between healthy and unhealthy food and beverage choices.

The clinic will run from April 13th to the 18th. Two things to remember is that the clinic will be closed on that Thursday and will only operate for half a day on that Saturday. Parents need to call to make an appointment for their kids. And they're encouraged to bring them in, even if they're not having problems. Cleanings are part of the deal for kids.

However, adults will not be eligible for cleanings. But they are able to get a wide range of services. The clinic won't be taking appointments for adults, but they can be seen on a walk-in, first-come-first-served basis.

All the services are free of charge. However, to help defray the extensive costs of bringing the Outreach Team to Maine, MaineCare will be accepted, if it's available.
