Former Old Town Police Sergeant Mike Hashey is facing multiple charges, including theft and failure to pay taxes, as the result of an investigation that started in 2015.

Hashey resigned in April of 2016, but was already under investigation for allegedly stealing items from the evidence room. Attorney General Janet Mills says he faces a total of 12 charges, including theft by deception, tampering with public records, and tax evasion.

He's accused of stealing evidence items and then altering the records to hide the theft. In addition, the AGl says he allegedly collected bigger tax returns than he was due by lying about his expenses, and didn't pay taxes on income that wasn't reported.

WABI-TV reports the total amount of stolen property, between the city of Old Town and the Old Town Police Association, tops $11,000. The case will now move to the Grand Jury.
