Catalyst Paper at the Rumford Mill has restarted its number 12 paper machine and hired back 51 previously furloughed employees to run it.

Good news in Maine's paper industry is scarce, and so this is a special day for those employees who were furloughed last fall. And the positive vibes may continue, depending on the success of a new strain of paper.

The number 12 machine is now turning out a grade of paper that's new to the Rumford Mill, one that's used in things like brochures, newsletters, and business documents. If it's well-received and orders begin to come in, a company spokesperson says more people may be hired to work at the mill.

For now, the machine is running and those 51 people are back at work.
