A Facebook page is quickly becoming a good site for checking road conditions before you leave the house.

I discovered 'Maine Weather/Road Conditions Reports!' a few months ago. It's run by volunteers, with contributions by its subscribers. The monitors are very strict about their guidelines on how to post, making the site easy to use and understand.

It works like this. You post the name of the town you're asking about, followed by your question or comment:

BANGOR  to UNITY - Anyone have information on how the roads are?

More often than not, you're going to get responses from people who have just driven the route you're asking about. In addition, you can put up comments about your recent experience. For example:

BANGOR - Outer Broadway is VERY slick. Take it slow and be careful!

This site, as well as 511 Maine, which gives DOT information about conditions and road closures, are handy for judging whether or not to go out. And don't forget, you can get cancellations and closings right here. Be safe!
