Phoenix, the pit bull that was dragged behind a vehicle on Wilson Street in Brewer in June, has been adopted from the Bangor Humane Society.

Phoenix suffered injuries to his chest and paws when he was dragged behind a truck driven by his former owner, Jeffrey Mayhew, 31.

He was adopted by Newburgh resident Colby Walker, who told the Bangor Daily News she took Phoenix home to her Parents' farm in Newburgh.

“He has tons of room to run and sometimes he thinks he’s a horse,” Walker said. “And he absolutely loves to go for car rides.”

Walker's parents raise miniature horses and have a black Lab-pit bull mix named Sam.

Mayhew pleaded no contest to animal cruelty and pleaded guilty to operating under the influence, violation of conditions of release and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.

He was sentenced to 118 days in jail, and he can never legally own a dog again.
