Beachgoers in Lubec were unable to save a 24-foot long basking shark that washed up on shore Wednesday morning.

A number of people poured buckets of seawater over the shark's gills hoping they could keep it alive.

New England Aquarium biologist Amy Knowlton told the Bangor Daily News several people from the aquarium brought in a boat hoping to tow the shark to deeper water.

“Sadly it had died by that point,” Knowlton told the BDN.
