The Augusta Police Department is warning residents of a 'spoofed,' or fake Facebook page that's reporting false stories.

Deputy Chief Jared Mills says the department has discovered that someone has created a Facebook page to look very similar to the official page, and posted several false stories. The fake postings include fictional stories about 3 children being killed by their mother, and a story about a family of 5 being killed in a car accident. Again, these stories and the page are fake.

The spoofed page looks nearly identical to the official page, except that it has several less postings, likes, and activity. The real Augusta Police Department Facebook page can be found here. A similar incident happened recently to the Skowhegan Police Department, where the page was spoofed and fake stories posted.

Anyone who thinks they have information about the fake Facebook page is asked to call Detective Chris Blodgett at (207) 626-2370, extension 3422.
