17 adults and one teenager were arrested at a 'Black Lives Matter' rally in Portland on Friday night.

According to the BDN, the arrests came after the protesters spent some time, with arms linked, blocking a street in the city. The protest started with about 100 people in Lincoln Park. After about an hour, the group moved to the intersection of Pearl and Commercial Streets, where they blocked traffic for hours.

Overall, it was a peaceful demonstration, except for a brief shouting match with one intoxicated young man who began calling 'All lives matter' in response to the group's chant of 'Black lives matter.' Tensions ran a little higher in response to a local news blogger who the protesters loudly encouraged to move away from the group.

Later in the evening, a man in an SUV attempted to drive through the protesters, who were standing, arms linked, across the intersection. No one was injured as he pushed his way through, but police needed to move the group out of the way. The driver was stopped by police a little farther down the road and then allowed to continue on after talking with the officers.

The arrests were made when police tried to disperse the group, after a several-hours-long gathering, and the protesters became confrontational. All but two of the people arrested were from Portland, and one was a 16-year-old. They were loaded into police wagons and taken from the scene, charged with misdemeanor Obstructing A Public Way, and released on bail.
