10 Places to See Wildlife in the Greater Bangor Area
It's World Wildlife Day and Maine's got plenty of it! Here are 10 places in or near Bangor where you are almost guaranteed to see some kind of critter!
Of course there are tons of places to see wildlife in the state, maybe even including your own backyard! Here is a list of our 10 favorite places around here!
- 1
Baxter State Park
Moose, birds, bears, and more galore! Baxter is one of those places you will always see wildlife. This is one of the only places in the state that I have seen a bear!
- 2
Ecotat Gardens & Arboretum
Acres of gardens, trees and wildlife can be found at this nature treasure trove in Hermon. Walking on the trails in the fall here I sat down on a rock right next to a deer who was laying down under some brush!
- 3
Acadia National Park
From sea life to woodland critters you can find it all here. While you watch seals, dolphins, and whales from the shore a raccoon, fox, or deer might sneak up on you!
- 4
Birdsacre
With acres of nature trails you will see more than birds here although the winged creatures are the highlight for sure.
- 5
Moosehead Lake Region
Birds to beavers can be found in large populations in this region. Of course moose can be found here too. This is a popular hunting and fishing destination for obvious reasons.
- 6
City Forest
You don't need to leave the city to see some wildlife. Bangor City Forest offers more than 10 trails taking you into the forest. Different trails take you though different habitats so this is the perfect place to find all different types of critters.
- 7
Bar Harbor Whale Watch
Even though you are not guaranteed to see a whale you will most likely see at least some seals or puffins. There are a lot of creatures who only stay away from the shore line and this is one of the only ways to get to see them. I'd recommend going at least once in your life.
- 8
Moose Point State Park
This park, although similar to other state parks, has one thing that makes it a great place to watch wildlife. It is often very quiet! Surrounded by forest and ocean this is a very relaxing park. This is where I found a family of baby squirrels as well as a jellyfish washed ashore!
- 9
Kenduskeag Stream Trail
Most of the wildlife you will see here are birds. But it is some of the best bird watching in the area. With many local falcons and bald eagles, stay here long enough and you might get quite a show as the birds fish for dinner.
- 10
Leonard's Mills
Wildlife and farm animals can be found here. On an average day you will see wildlife as they go about their day. On 'Living History' days you will see oxen pulling carts and other farm animals on the premises as well.
