Woman’s Body Discovered In Burned-Out Car In Orrington
Police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found inside a burned-out car in Orrington Sunday morning.
The 2015 Toyota Corolla is registered to a Orrington woman and was destroyed by the fire. The car was discovered engulfed in flames in a small brook off the Swetts Pond Road at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
The body was burned beyond recognition, according to a Monday news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy Sunday on the remains and DNA work is now underway to assist with the woman’s identification.
The car was taken to the State Police Crime lab in Augusta for examination and investigators continue to work on how the fire started.
Swetts Pond Road, from Johnson Mill Road to River Road was closed to traffic all Sunday morning while police investigated.
