It's hard to believe 20 years have passed since the world stood still and watched the destruction unfold the morning of September 11, 2001.

I'd wager a guess we could all name, with uncanny clarity,  where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news.

And while I have seen a number of online events being mentioned as a way to commemorate the two decades that have passed since that time, I noticed a couple of local places folks could go to honor the occasion and pay their respects this year.

In Orono, up at the University of Maine, they will be holding an observance ceremony on Friday, the day before the 20th Anniversary. According to the Orono Fire Department Facebook Page, the event is set to take place between 12 and 12:30PM that day.

"The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will be observed at noon on Sept. 10 on the UMaine Mall with a moment of silence and a reflection from Capt. James Settele. The Division of Student Life also will organize a Mall display of the names of the 9/11 victims."

Down the road a bit in Hermon this weekend, the Hermon Fire Department is inviting folks to gather Saturday morning as they mark the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 by recalling what happened that day.

"Join with us on 9-11 at 8:30 am for a brief commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on America. All are invited to gather in front of the station as we recall that day followed by a period of silence at 8:46 am, the time flight 11 impacted the North Tower. All are invited to join with us for refreshments after the ceremony.

NEVER FORGET!"

In Ellsworth, they'll be taking some time Saturday morning, starting at 8:30, right at the Ellsworth Fire Station, to remember. From the Ellsworth Fire Department's Facebook Page:
"

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony 20th Anniversary
When: This Saturday, Sept. 11th
Where: Ellsworth Fire Department, 1 City Hall Plaza
Time: 8:30am to conclusion (approximately 15-20 minutes)
The 9/11 WTC steel will be on display until 6pm on Saturday. All are welcome to attend. This will be held rain or shine."
However you choose to mark the moment, I hope you will take some time to remember the events of 9/11. But don't only remember the bad. There were countless stories of heroism, bravery, kindness and compassion that came out of such a terrible event. A sense of unity, the likes of which we haven't seen in quite some time. That's worth remembering, too.
