8 Things You Should Know When Going through a Toll Booth in Maine
While Maine may be known as 'Vacationland,' we also do our fair share of traveling. With that in mind, you may want to keep these tips on hand when going through our Maine toll booths.
According to the Department of Transportation, toll roads in the United States serve as a vital means of financing highway upkeep without relying directly on taxpayer funds.
Further explained on the Maine Turnpike Authority’s website:
Tolls are the only source of revenue used by the Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) to maintain and operate the Turnpike as well as pay back bondholders who loan private capital to finance safety improvements, and major reconstruction projects.
Additionally, the Maine Turnpike only accepts cash or E-ZPass as methods of payment for tolls, and unlike other New England states, does not run a 'Pay by Plate' system.
With that being stated, if you’re looking to travel anywhere south of Bangor, eventually you will run into a toll booth. They’re unavoidable, at least, that’s what we believe. If anyone knows how to avoid them, certainly, don’t be shy and please share with the class.
However, before you embark on your journeys in and around our Pine Tree State, or maybe venturing outside of it, it wouldn’t hurt to familiarize yourself with toll booth etiquette to ensure a hassle-free and pleasant experience for both yourself and the toll workers.
With all of that being said, here are just eight of the most important things to keep in mind before driving through a toll booth here in Maine!
