After numerous people have ended their life by jumping off the bridge, prevention has become a very important focus. Instead of installing a suicide prevention fence or net, suicide hotline phones have been installed at both ends of the bridge.
In the wake of a Bucksport Middle School teacher taking her life by jumping from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Sunday, the state legislature considers erecting a suicide-prevention fence to prevent more deaths.
The proposal was forwarded by Representative Joe Brooks of Winterport and it moved through committee without debate and now moves forward for consideration.
