Data collected by the Maine Department of Transportation shows that speed is to blame for the massive pileup on I-95 in Maine last week.

According to the data, which was requested by the Bangor Daily News, most drivers were going at least 10 mph over the posted 45-mph speed limit.

According to the BDN, the flashing reduced speed limit signs are able to record the speed of passing vehicles. The sign at mile 159 northbound recorded an average speed of 62 mph in the hour leading up to the crash. One vehicle was clocked at 73 mph.

At least 75 vehicles were involved in last week's accident, which occurred on the northbound side of the road between miles 170 and 173.

At least 17 people were taken to the hospital. There were no fatalities.
