Scarborough Plant Ready to Make COVID-19 Testing Kits
A manufacturing laboratory in Scarborough is ready to start making COVID-19 tests, with the fastest results, so far.
Abbott Laboratories announced on its website that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given emergency authorization to start production for the tests. Manufacturing is set to begin on Wednesday.
The company anticipates delivering more than 1 million testing kits per month, each of which is about the size of a toaster. Abbott Lab's ID NOW platform is already used to detect Influenza A & B, Strep A, and RSV.
According to WABI-TV, Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah says more information is needed but he's 'very interested' in the platform.
