Authorities are investigating the details surrounding an inmate at the Penobscot County Jail who died earlier this week.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office released a statement Wednesday stating that when correctional officers arrived on the scene, they found inmates trying to resuscitate a male inmate who was unresponsive. And despite the best, efforts of the medical staff who had taken over resuscitation efforts, the inmate was eventually pronounced dead.

"An early investigation indicates the medical event was not caused by any physical altercation between inmates or with staff. The incident is being investigated as a potential overdose death and we are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The Bangor Police Department was called to investigate and the Maine Department of Corrections was notified as part of the Attorney General’s Death Investigation Protocol."

The family of the man has been notified, but due to the fact that they were traveling, and needed time to reach other family and friends first, the Sheriff's office has not released the identity of the man yet.
