Famed artist Vincent Van Gogh sliced off half his ear on this day in 1888. Ouch. He used a rusty razor, and if you're wondering what he did with it, he gave it to a girlfriend, a local prostitute as a present. When given the ear, she said "I love you". Van Gogh replied "What? I can't hear you, did you say something?"

That act was long thought to be the desperate act of a man driven mad by the failed love affair, but some medical experts now believe Van Gogh suffered from a painful ear disorder, now easily treatable.
