A man from Old Town faces a gross sexual assault charge after police say he sexually assaulted a juvenile under the age of 14 with whom he connected on an online messaging app.

Zachary Lankist, 28, of Old Town was arrested on Monday. Police say Lankist first connected with the juvenile earlier this year via the app. The juvenile and Lankist later met in person in Rockland, where the assault allegedly took place.

The Rockland police were assisted by the Old Town Police, Bangor Police, Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit, and Maine State Police Evidence Response Team.

The investigation is still ongoing and more charges are expected, police said. Anyone with any information related to this case is asked to contact Rockland Police Detective Anne Griffith at (207) 594-0316 ext. 232 or via email.
