
Dallas Fans Start National Anthem Tradition for Cooper Flagg
Fans of the Dallas Mavericks have incorporated their 18-year-old No. 1 draft pick’s name into the Star-Spangled Banner.
Dallas fans chanting during the national anthem isn’t new—hockey fans have shouted ‘Stars!’ in unison to pay tribute to the Dallas Stars for years. Now, Mavericks fans are adding their own chant while still maintaining the original.

Ahead of Cooper Flagg’s NBA debut, a Mavericks fan account suggested fans shout ‘Flagg!’ during the anthem at the ‘flag was still there’ line.
Before the season opener against the Spurs tipped off, the anthem began, and, sure enough, fans carried out the chant—welcoming the rookie with a unique new tradition.

As of October 27th, 2025, the Mavericks have played three home games, and with each one, the ‘Flagg’ chant has grown louder and louder.
While the Dallas Stars’ anthem tradition remains timeless, if Cooper lives up to the hype, this new Mavericks chant feels like it could stick around as long as he’s in the ‘Big D.’

And there you have it! Continuing a tradition in Dallas sports, Mavericks fans are now chanting ‘Flagg’ during the anthem.
