Maine is known for its abundance of all things wild. With more forest than most states Maine is a sanctuary for all feathered, furry, and finned critters. But that doesn't mean all of them are safe.

Maine is home to over 50 endangered and threatened animals. Summer in Maine brings people into their habitats in National and State parks whether they are looking for wildlife or not, humans do make an impact on wildlife survival.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has compiled a list of animals specific to Maine who are low in population numbers. They hope those who venture into the forest will be aware of these species and their delicate populations. If more people are aware of the endangered and threatened species they will know to not interfere with their natural lives.

Most of Maine's at risk creatures are birds and insects. One of the iconic birds for the Maine coast is the Atlantic Puffin, a bird on the threatened list. Piping Plovers are most commonly seen on Maine beaches, although they are not in the forest, they are on the endangered list.

Think twice before swatting at mayflies as the Flat-head mayfly and Tomah mayfly are both species in trouble. While driving near woods and water keep an eye out for turtles crossing he road. Blanding's Turtle, Box Turtles, and the Spotted Turtle are are on the list.

One of the endangered species I see the most is the peregrine falcon. Luckily these birds are very territorial and you will want to stay away from their nests to avoid being dive bombed.
