While we know Maine is ‘the way life should be,’ this new report ranking us near the top certainly validates it.

Listen, if we were writing this report, Maine would be a top-two state to live in—and it wouldn’t be number two. But bias aside, we know we’re lucky to live here, and it’s nice when reports with hard numbers back that up.

Alright, having said that, how do we know Maine ranks as one of the best states to live in—and what is this based on?

WalletHub’s 2025 ‘Best States to Live In’ report ranked all 50 states by comparing them across five key categories: Affordability, Economy, Education & Health, Quality of Life, and Safety. Using 51 weighted metrics scored on a 100-point scale, they calculated each state’s overall average to determine its final ranking.

So, with that in mind, where exactly did Maine place, and how did we perform compared to other states in these key categories?

According to WalletHub and their recent report, ‘Best States to Live In’ for 2025, Maine ranked 13th overall—35th in Affordability, 8th in Economy, 11th in Education & Health, 26th in Quality of Life, and 10th in Safety.

Massachusetts may have claimed the top spot overall, but Maine still shined, ranking 2nd in homeownership rates.

The report from WalletHub continues, noting that Maine also tied for 2nd in education level among adults and has the 3rd lowest crime rate in the country, behind only New Hampshire and Idaho.
