South Portland Police say the suspect in a shooting at the Maine Mall is now in custody.

Police Have Identified the Suspect, Who is Now in Custody

Police received information on Thursday that Ahmed Basheer Awad, 20, of Westbrook, wanted to turn himself in, so there could be a safe and peaceful resolution for everyone involved. Authorities worked with Awad, through a third party, and at 3:30 Thursday afternoon, they took him into custody without incident. He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail, where he was charged with:

  • Elevated aggravated assault
  • Reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon
  • Carrying a concealed/threatening display of a weapon (person under 21 years of age)

Awad is being held on $100,000 cash bail pending his arraignment, which is scheduled for Friday. The firearm in this case has not been recovered.

The suspect was identified by police through several surveillance images from the Maine Mall, which were released to the public.

Portland Police Say the Suspect Shot One Person and Then Left the Maine Mall

The charges stem from an incident Wednesday afternoon in the Maine Mall in South Portland that left one victim injured and a suspect at large. shooting at the Maine Mall in South Portland on Wednesday afternoon. Police evacuated the mall while they searched for the suspect, who turned himself in on Thursday afternoon. While officials have not commented on the motive behind the shooting, they do believe this is an isolated incident. There were no reports of anyone else being injured in the incident.

Officials Say the Person Shot in Maine Mall Was Taken to a Local Hospital

Officials say South Portland Fire And Rescue transported the victim to Maine Medical Center. Wednesday evening, police said the victim was in surgery and is expected to survive their injuries.
